Ubisoft is giving away $9 in virtual currency for free-to-play shooter XDefiant

Ubisoft is giving away virtual currency for its free-to-play shooter XDefiant this month.

The virtual currency is being offered in the form of log-in bonuses, with 900 XCoins (worth $9) available to claim between today and September 24.

XCoins can be used to purchase in-game items including cosmetics and the game’s battle pass. A bundle of 1,000 XCoins currently costs $9.99 / £7.99.

The promotion, which will also offer players weapon and battle pass XP boosters, is being billed as a celebration of the end of XDefiant Season 1.

However, it comes amid reports that there’s been a sharp drop in interest in the game, contributing to a significant decline in Ubisoft’s share price.

The XDefiant giveaway begins today at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm BST, which is the same time as the Call of Duty Black Ops 6 beta ends.

In an accompanying social media post spotted by GameSpot, XDefiant executive producer Mark Rubin said that Ubisoft San Franciso has appointed a number of team members to work on fresh content for XDefiant.

“Also, we are super excited about the roadmap of upcoming content and features and we’ve added a bunch more great talented people to the XDefiant team for just that reason,” he said.

It’s a notable comment, given that Ubisoft recently laid off 45 employees across its San Francisco studio and Cary, North Carolina-based Red Storm Entertainment.

VGC’s XDefiant review called it “a confident shooter that’s far more than a Call of Duty knockoff”.
