Sony will soon sell refurbished PS5 consoles at a reduced price

Sony is set to start selling refurbished PlayStation 5 consoles.

The PlayStation Direct site now has a section called Certified Refurbished, offering consoles and controllers at a reduced price.

Refurbished consoles are pre-owned hardware which has been returned to Sony for a variety of reasons, be that because they were faulty, or simply because they opened the box, changed their mind and returned it for a refund, meaning it can no longer be sold as new.

As spotted by Push Square, the listings – which are currently marked as ‘coming soon’ with no indication of a date, offer a refurbished PS5 with a disc drive for £389.99 / $399.99.

This is a saving of £90 / $100 on a brand new console, which costs £479.99 / $499.99 on the same store.

According to Sony, a refurbished PS5 is “extensively cleaned, tested and ready for a brand new home”, with “PlayStation quality 100% guaranteed”.

“You will receive a product that works like new with genuine PlayStation replacement parts (as needed) that has been thoroughly cleaned, inspected and tested,” Sony says.

The site is also selling refurbished controllers, though the savings there are smaller. A pink DualSense can be bought refurbished for $65.

“All Certified Refurbished will come with the necessary accessories, cables and manuals, and are packaged in their own branded Certified Refurbished packaging.”

A 12-month warranty is also included with every refurbished console, which Sony says “may have minor cosmetic imperfections”.

The news follows Sony’s announcement of its PlayStation 5 Pro console, which will cost £699 / $699 when it’s released on November 7.
