Shinji Mikami doesn’t think there’s ‘a lot of space’ for a new Dino Crisis while Monster Hunter is so popular

Dino Crisis creator Shinji Mikami has said he’s surprised to hear that fans want more Dino Crisis games.

In a new interview with Eurogamer, Mikami said he was “very surprised to hear that” when asked about fan desire for a new Dino Crisis game, suggesting that Capcom had already covered the dinosaur-fighting market with another series.

“The awesomeness of dinosaurs and the stuff you can do with dinosaurs, that’s been kind of really nailed down by Monster Hunter in recent years,” he said.

Mikami went on to say that he wasn’t sure there was room for the series while Capcom’s Monster Hunter franchise remains so popular.

“So even if I were to decide to make a remake or a new version of Dino Crisis, I don’t really feel like there’s a whole lot of space for that kind of game right now, just since Monster Hunter has become such a big game. But yeah, it is surprising.”

The Dino Crisis series made its debut in 1999, and was described by many as ‘Resident Evil with dinosaurs’.

The game was successful enough to spawn two sequels, the last of which – the Xbox-exclusive Dino Crisis 3 – was released in 2003.

Mikami says he thinks Monster Hunter is scratching Capcom’s dinosaur-killing itch.

Earlier this year, Capcom released a survey in which it asked fans if they’d like new entries in certain retro series, including Dino Crisis.

While Capcom’s survey doesn’t mean any of these sequels or remakes are actively in development, it did imply that the publisher is seeking feedback from its audience before it decides which projects are worth pursuing next.
