Roblox is adding the ability to sell games for real money

Roblox will soon allow developers to sell their games on its platform for real-world money.

Currently, developers can charge users a one-time Robux fee to access a paid experience.

But starting later this year, game makers will be able to offer their paid access experiences for purchase in real currency value on desktops.

For titles sold at $9.99, $29.99 and $49.99, developers will receive 50%, 60% and 70% revenue share, respectively.

While this feature will initially only be available on PC, Roblox said it plans to later expand it to other supported platforms.

The goal “is to increase the appeal the platform to existing developers” who want more options to create and monetise their games, Manuel Bronstein, chief product officer of Roblox, said at the company’s annual developers conference (via CNBC).

While most games will remain free to play, Roblox hopes the new pricing plan will incentivise developers who “want to do something more grandiose” on the platform.

“To participate in the broader gaming market, we need to branch out to all the forms of the gaming market,” Bronstein said.

Starting early next year, Roblox will also let creators sell physical merchandise from within their game experiences. The feature will be available to creators who sell physical goods through various e-commerce platforms, starting with Shopify.
