Overwatch 2’s future PvE content has reportedly been permanently cancelled

Overwatch 2‘s PvE mode has reportedly been permanently scrapped as Blizzard struggles to find focus for the hero shooter sequel.

According to Bloomberg, the PvE mode, which received three missions in 2023, will receive no more content, due to the initial pack selling poorly.

It’s also claimed that as part of company-wide reduction in staff, the game’s PvE department was heavily affected.

“Overwatch 2 developers were informed that the company does not plan to finish any of the remaining planned PvE content,” according to Bloomberg.

The report also claims that in late 2023, members of the Overwatch 2 team were told that “based on the game’s poor financial performance in the first half of the year, they shouldn’t have received anything,” in regard to performance-related bonuses.

Since launch, the game has faced a difficult road as it struggles to make a case for the release of a full numbered sequel, rather than an update.

Blizzard announced this week that Overwatch 2 heroes will be free at release starting with the launch of Season 10 in mid-April.

In a developer update released on Tuesday, game director Aaron Keller said players will no longer have to purchase the premium battle pass to unlock new characters at release, or grind for hours to unlock them through the free track of the battle pass.

“Heroes are one of the most exciting additions to the game and we want all of our players to have immediate access to them when they launch, which is why I’m thrilled to share that Venture and all future heroes will be free for all players when they launch,” he said.
