MultiVersus may be returning soon, according to McDonald’s Australia

Free-to-play crossover fighting game MultiVersus may be preparing for its comeback, according to McDonald’s Australia.

As spotted and posted on X by journalist Edmond Tran, the Happy Meal page on the Australian McDonald’s website currently advertises the existing Crash Bandicoot toys.

However, at the bottom of the page is the message “coming soon… WB MultiVersus” along with a series of 12 character tins.

The tins, which each feature two characters, don’t list any newcomers, only mentioning characters who were already in the game when it shut down last year.

MultiVersus, which launched as an open beta in July 2022, is a Smash Bros-style crossover fighting game featuring characters from a variety of Warner Bros properties, including DC Comics, Looney Tunes, Cartoon Network, Game of Thrones, Tom & Jerry, Gremlins, Rick & Morty and The Iron Giant.

The MultiVersus open beta launched in July 2022 and was initially very popular, with a peak of more than 143,000 players on Steam on day one, rising to 153,433 the following day.

A month after its launch, Warner claimed that over 20 million players had already downloaded and played the game, suggesting it had a strong base on which to build.

After this, however, the daily peak player count fell dramatically, and by February 2023 it had dipped below 1,000 for the first time, marking a drop in daily peak player count of 99.4% in less than seven months.

A total of 23 characters were available at the time of the game’s shutdown

MultiVersus studio Player First Games announced in March 2023 that the game was set to be taken offline, and it was subsequently removed from all digital storefronts in April 2023, after which the servers were completely shut down in June.

Part of the reason for the drop in players may have been a tepid response to the game’s Season 2 content. The game’s first season saw the release of five new characters over the course of around two months.

However, over the course of Season 2 – which ran from November 2022 until the beta’s closure in June 2023 – just one character, Marvin the Martian, was released.

After the servers were shut down, players launching the game were met with a message reading: “We plan to be back and better than ever with new content, features, modes and more when the game returns next year and will ensure that all of your progress and content will carry over.”
