Modern Warfare 3 tops US January sales chart ahead of Tekken and Suicide Squad

Modern Warfare 3 was the best-selling game in the US in January, while PS5 was once again the leading console platform.

Activision’s latest Call of Duty game topped the software chart ahead of new releases Tekken 8, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and Persona 3 Reload, while Madden NFL 24 rounded off the top five.

Other new entries to make the top 20 chart included Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth at No.7, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown at No.13, and Jujutsu Kaisen: Cursed Clash at No.19, according to research firm Circana.

The Last of Us Part 2 charted at No.9, up from No.167 in December, following the release of the game’s PS5 remaster.

Circana doesn’t track sales from Palworld publisher Pocketpair, so sales of the game weren’t included in its monthly update.

On the hardware front, PS5 continued its strong performance in 2023 by again topping monthly sales in both units and dollars.

After 39 months of availability, PS5 life-to-date unit sales are now tracking 7% ahead of PS4 during the same time in market, and 68% ahead of PS3, according to Circana executive director Mat Piscatella.

Nintendo Switch placed second in unit sales last month, while Xbox Series X/S ranked second in dollar sales.

Total US consumer spending on game hardware, content and accessories in January grew 15% year-over-year to $5.1 billion, driven by a jump in software sales and aided by a five-week tracking period versus a four-week tracking period last year.
