Media Molecule layoffs will mean the end of live curation support for Dreams

Media Molecule has confirmed that its curation team is being let go as part of previously announced layoffs.

The Sony-owned Dreams and LittleBigPlanet studio said last October that it was entering a consultation process for team members in certain departments.

“Unfortunately, in Spring 2024, we will be saying goodbye to the last Molecules who were affected by the consultation process – our Curation Team,” the studio said in an update published on Wednesday.

Media Molecule discontinued most live support for Dreams last September after shifting its focus to a new project, but it had continued to offer curation services in-game, as well as online through various channels including The Impsider, which will no longer be supported.

It’s set to end live support for the DreamSurfing playlist and DreamShaping creation workshop in mid-April.

“This will coincide with the launch of new playlists alongside spotlighting the Dreams Recommender playlist providing tip-top recommendations based on what you’ve recently played in Dreams”, Media Molecule said.

“Overall, the plan here is ensuring that Dreams transitions into a self-sustaining platform, with these changes helping to filter new creations through to regular Dreams players whilst creators reach their deserved audience for their games, animations, music and everything inbetween.”

Before ending live support for DreamShaping, the studio said it’s “working to bring together a whole host of essential kits, from both Media Molecule and the Dreams Community, to help creators find exactly what they need for their creations”.

It plans to continue Dreams streams and supporting players via the game’s social channels, and said it currently has no plans to close the game.

“While it’s impossible for anyone to predict what the future might hold, we want to reassure you today that there are currently no plans to take Dreams offline, restricting access to the thousands upon thousands of amazing creations brought to life by all of our fabulous creators”.
