Martha is Dead is being turned into a movie
Controversial horror game Martha is Dead is getting a movie adaptation.
The game’s Italian studio LKA has teamed up with its UK publisher Wired Productions and Swedish film production company Studios Extraordinaires to make a film version.
“Every element of Martha is Dead was created with extraordinary precision and care,” LKA founder and the game’s writer and designer Luca Dalcò said in a statement.
“The narrative’s complexity was meticulously planned, visualised, and even shaped with a cinematic quality in mind. Bringing this to life as a film is a dream come true.”
The game, which was released in February 2022, is set in Tuscany in 1944 and sees players controlling Giulia, a young woman who finds herself caught up in a dark mystery when her twin sister Martha is found dead.
While praised for its extremely detailed landscapes, Martha is Dead also attracted controversy for some of its more questionable scenes, mostly involving bodily mutilation and a sub-plot that partly revolves around miscarriage.
As a result, the PlayStation versions of the game were censored – some of the scenes that were interactive in the Xbox and PC versions were made non-interactive on the PS4 and PS5 versions.
VGC’s Martha is Dead review labelled it “a deeply disturbing game that isn’t for everyone”, calling it “an equally absorbing and shocking adventure that will stay with players long after the credits roll”.
“As long as you can withstand its often extremely disturbing content, Martha is Dead is a absorbing and atmospheric adventure with a brilliantly realised setting and a beautifully haunting soundtrack,” we wrote. “We can’t stress enough that it won’t suit all tastes, however.”
