Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is the 30th game to earn a coveted ‘Famitsu 40’
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth has become only the 30th game to receive a perfect score in respected Japanese magazine Famitsu.
As reported by Ryokutya2089, issue 1835 of the weekly publication (which will arrive on Japanese shelves on Thursday) gives the game a score of 40.
Unlike most video game publications, Famitsu games are reviewed by four different critics, who each give the game their own score of 10.
In order to get a ‘Famitsu 40’, then, a game needs to unanimously get a perfect 10 from all four reviewers. This has now only happened 30 times since the magazine first launched in June 1986.
Infinite Wealth is only the fourth game to get a Famitsu 40 in the 2020s so far. Ghost of Tsushima got one in 2020, while last year the accolade was given to both The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Street Fighter 6.
It’s also the second game in the Like a Dragon / Yakuza series to receive a Famitsu 40, after PS3 title Yakuza 5 got one back in 2012.
It still remains to be seen if Infinite Wealth will become a member of an even more exclusive club – games that have received both a ‘Famitsu 40’ and an ‘Edge 10’.
A score of 10 in UK magazine Edge is considered similarly uncommon, with only 26 games receiving the score since the magazine launched 30 years ago.
However, only six games to date – the last being The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – have received perfect scores in both publications.
Infinite Wealth seemingly arrived too late to feature in the latest issue of Edge, which released earlier this week, meaning it will be a number of weeks before it’s known whether it will be the seventh game to achieve the feat.
VGC’s Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth review says the game is “the series at its very best”, calling it a “can’t-miss RPG”.
“Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is one of the best RPGs we’ve played in years,” we concluded. “Excellent combat, a wonderful cast of characters, and a willingness to be incredibly weird make it absolutely unmissable.
“Not only that, but it’s so full to the brim with things to do, we could have probably spent another three weeks with it and not finished everything.”
