Konami acknowledges that Metal Gear Solid 4 is still only playable on PS3

Konami has acknowledged that Metal Gear Solid 4 is still only playable on PlayStation 3, over 15 years after its release.

Speaking to IGN, producer Noriaki Okamura said: “We definitely are aware of this situation with MGS4. Unfortunately, we can’t really say too much at the moment with Vol 1 containing MGS 1-3 dot dot dot… you can probably connect the dots!

“Right now we still are internally concerned about what we should be doing for the future of the series. So sorry, we can’t really reveal anything at the moment. But stay tuned!”

References to Metal Gear Solid 4, Metal Gear Solid 5, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker were found in the files of the MGS Master Collection Volume 1.

Currently, Metal Gear Solid 5 is playable on modern platforms thanks to its release on PS4 and Xbox One. However, should MGS 4 and Peace Walker come to modern platforms, it would mark the first time in history that Metal Gear Solid 4 was playable outside of its native platform.

At one point during its development, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was “running beautifully and smoothly” on Xbox 360, according to its assistant producer.

“This is a 20-year-old game,” Okamura told VGC. “So when we decided to bring to modern platforms, we didn’t want to make it feel like an old game.

“We did refine a lot of things to make sure that for those who didn’t play the original, it still feels like a game that came out in this day and age.”
