Joker 2 Getting Home Release Less Than A Month After Theatrical Flop

Through its first three weeks in theaters, Joker: Folie à Deux has taken in $56 million domestically, far below the original Joker film from 2019. Now, Warner Bros. has set a digital debut for the Joker sequel that is less than a month after its theatrical premiere, with a home video release right around the corner.

Folie à Deux will arrive on digital outlets on October 29, which largely foreshadows the end of its theatrical run. The film has already fallen to No. 6 at the box office with $2.18 million last weekend, and it won’t be making much more than that in this country. Internationally, the Joker sequel has fared better, with $135.6 million from other countries. That brings its worldwide total to $192.2 million against a reported $200 million budget.

Theaters usually keep half of a film’s box office total, and Folie à Deux is estimated to lose $125-$200 million for Warner Bros., making it one of the biggest flops of all time. No one expected this from a sequel to Joker, which made over $1 billion worldwide and earned Joaquin Phoenix an Oscar for Best Actor. Phoenix and director Todd Phillips reportedly earned $20 million each for the sequel, while Lady Gaga was paid $12 million for her leading role.

Following its digital release, Joker: Folie à Deux will be arriving on 4K and Blu-ray on December 17. The film is also getting a steelbook release, which is already less expensive than other recent movies. The Joker sequel probably won’t make its streaming debut in 2024, but it should arrive on Max at some point in early 2025.
