Indie gem Celeste gets a free N64-inspired 3D platformer to celebrate its sixth anniversary

The studio behind Celeste has released a free 3D platformer to celebrate the game’s sixth anniversary.

Celeste 64: Fragments of the Mountain was developed by Extremely OK Games and can be downloaded for free from the itch.io page of the studio’s former incarnation, Maddy Makes Games.

“Relive the magic of Celeste Mountain alongside Madeline in this small, heartfelt 3D platformer,” the game’s description reads.

According to the itch.io page, Celeste 64 was “created in a week(ish) by the Celeste team to celebrate the game’s sixth anniversary”.

Despite the title, Celeste 64 isn’t actually a Nintendo 64 game, nor do there appear to be plans to port it to the console – it’s simply a tribute to the early days of polygonal console games.

The free game currently only runs on PC, but Extremely OK Games says a Mac version is coming soon.

Celeste was released for consoles and PC in January 2018. The platformer was created by Maddy Thorson and co-developer Noel Berry, with art outsourced to Brazilian studio MiniBoss.

It was praised for its tight platforming mechanics as well as its depiction of mental health, with the game’s main character struggling with anxiety as she scales an imposing mountain.

The game’s final story chaper, titled Chapter 9: Farewell, was released as a free update in September 2019 and added over 100 “very hard” new levels plus 40 minutes of new music.
