Exorcist Sequel Loses Director David Gordon-Green
The Exorcist: Deceiver has hit a bump in the road and has lost David Gordon Green as the film’s director. Because Green departs from the film, it’s unclear when the movie will be released.
Thanks to The Hollywood Reporter, we know that Green had recently seemed noncommittal, saying in a statement:
“My intention is just to start making things, and as those plans come together, if I find myself in that [The Exorcist: Deceiver] director’s chair, I’d be thrilled,” Green said.” But right now, I’m navigating it from a story perspective and looking at my realities of life as I pivot.”
The Hollywood Reporter also explained that the 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer failed to meet box office expectations. The film earned $136.2 million globally and $65.5 million domestically. Universal had paid $400 million for the rights to the horror franchise and originally planned to make a trilogy that started with Believer.
David Gordon Green has worked on various films and TV shows. These include the recent Halloween trilogy, Apple TV’s Mythic Quest, Max’s The Righteous Gemstones, and more.
Be sure to read our review of The Exorcist: Believer, where Phil Owen wrote: “The Exorcist had an immense cultural impact in the 1970s because it was hugely disturbing in surprising ways, and stuck with audiences long after they left the theater. Believer lacks that same oomph, opting instead to remix the original without taking it anywhere meaningful that the original didn’t already go.”
