Epic acknowledges that it’s easier to die in Fortnite’s free cars than its paid ones

Epic Games has acknowledged a discrepancy with its newly released cars, which has created a pay-to-win situation.

As demonstrated on TikTok by Nickeh30, a number of the free cars in Fortnite – which can be found in the base free-to-play game or unlocked without spending money – make it easier for their drivers to be killed than some of the paid cars.

In the video, Nickeh30 shows how a Whiplash car, which is free in the game, has a large windscreen which means players can enter the passenger seat of the car, lean out the window and kill the driver by shooting through the windscreen.

He then demonstrates this with a number of other free cars, including the Werewolf, the Scorpion and the Masamune, by jumping into the passenger side of each and killing their drivers by shooting through the windscreen.

However, he then enters the passenger side of a Samurai, a car which can only be acquired with real money, and shows that the much smaller windscreen makes it harder to see the driver, let alone kill them.

“While it’s still possible to hit your opponent sometimes, it’s way more difficult than these ‘pay-to-lose’ cars,” he says.

The discrepancy between windscreen sizes has technically created a ‘pay-to-win’ situation, something Epic has said would never be the case in Fortnite.

As such, the company provided a statement to Kotaku saying it knew about the problem and was looking into a solution.

“We’re aware of the issue and have a fix planned for an upcoming build,” the company said.

It’s not yet clear if this means the windscreens will be changed entirely, or if some other change will be implemented to make it easier to kill drivers in paid cars, or harder to kill drivers in free ones.
