With a game titled Dragon’s Dogma 2, you just know that you’re going to be fighting a lot of overgrown lizards. These creatures are ferocious and deadly, and you need to be on your guard if you want to eliminate them. Here’s our guide on how to defeat Dragons to acquire Wyrmslife Crystals in Dragon’s Dogma 2. Likewise, please be reminded that this article contains spoilers.

How to beat Dragons and get Wyrmslife Crystals in Dragon’s Dogma 2

Collecting Wyrmslife Crystals, formed from the blood of Dragons, becomes one of the main objectives much later in the campaign. Specifically, this occurs once you’ve obtained a quest called Flickering Shadows. You’re tasked with meeting a man named Ambrosius, who’s located along the coast north of Bakbattahl. Ambrosius wants you to obtain at least 15 Wyrmslife Crystals so he can create a powerful weapon. This leads to another quest called A New Godsway.

Ambrosius also asks you to speak with two individuals (both of their locations will be marked on your map). One is the Oracle, who grants an unlockable vocation: the Trickster. The other is the Dragonforged, who sells a few items in exchange for Wyrmslife Crystals (we’ll get to him later).

Potential Dragon locations

Dragons appear in various areas, and they’ll often goad you to fight them. Here are the ones that we’ve encountered during our playthrough:

Let’s put it this way: if you’re not prepared, then fighting Dragons in Dragon’s Dogma 2 will lead to a terrible mauling. Watch out for their devastating abilities:

  • Melve – You fight this Dragon as part of the Readvent of Calamity quest, which also leads to the Ulrika romance arc.
  • Vernworth – This Dragon straight up appears at the city’s entrance gate. Watch as a dozen guards start stabbing it, while other citizens flee and panic.
  • Harve Village – At the ruins northeast of the village.
  • Guerco Cavern – Sleeping near the campsite.
  • Ancient Battleground – In the open fields that lead to the Cenotaph (and your first meeting with the Sphinx).
  • Reverant Shrine – Just outside the Oracle’s temple.
  • Dragonsbreath Tower – There’s an NPC here named Sigurd, and he has one of the unlockable vocations (in case you missed it beforehand).

Fighting and defeating Dragons

Let’s put it this way: You need to be well-prepared if you want to collect Wyrmslife Crystals in Dragon’s Dogma 2. That’s because Dragons have some nasty abilities:

  • Ground Pound – Trying to climb on a Dragon? Well, if you’re underneath it or on its chest, it might just leap and crush you as it lands back on the ground.
  • Flame Breath – No self-respecting Dragon would forget to breathe fire. This ability can be used as stream of fire in a straight line, a blazing frontal arc, or a razing attack while flying in the air.
  • Venomous Breath – Red Dragons (the ones that look corrupted) belch out acidic globs.
  • Lightning Strike – If the Dragon’s chest pulses blue, it will call on several lightning bolts to strike the ground.
  • Magma Explosion – If the Dragon’s chest pulses red, orbs will appear around you before dealing tremendous damage via explosions.

Dragon weak spots and ideal vocations

One thing you need to watch for is when Dragons show their weak spots:

  • The chest of Green Dragons will light up to reveal their pulsing hearts. Strike this weak point to deal extra damage.
  • Red Dragons, meanwhile, have pustulent growths all over their bodies.

As for which classes truly excel in these fights, we outlined some options in our best vocations/class tier list. The Thief is a great pick, since Skull Splitter allows you to hit weak spots multiple times. There’s also the Sorcerer due to high-damage spells like Maelstrom and Meteoron. The Magick-Archer, meanwhile, can expend most of its HP to shoot Martyr’s Bolt, which causes projectiles to shred targets in seconds. As for the Mystic Spearhand, it can cast Mirour Vestige to create an impenetrable barrier for the party. Lastly, there’s the Warfarer, which lets you equip all non-ultimate abilities that you’ve unlocked.

What can you do with Wyrmslife Crystals

The Dragons that you battle drop Wyrmslife Crystals. If they manage to fly away and escape, you might only receive one or two. If you slay them, however, you can obtain anywhere from 10 to 20 in one go.

Wyrmslife Crystals serve two functions. First, and as mentioned earlier, you can give 15 of these to Ambrosius. Once he crafts a particular weapon, you get to advance to the later stages of the campaign. We don’t want to spoil what happens during that part, so it’s up to you to experience it for yourself.

Second, you can use these as currency when purchasing from the Dragonforged, one of the characters whom Ambrosius told you to speak with. The Dragonforged sells the following in exchange for Wyrmslife Crystals (WLC):

  • Ferrystone – Used to fast travel to Portcrystals; costs 3 WLC.
  • Portcrystal – This is a reusable variant that can be placed at any outdoor location; costs 20 WLC. You can learn more in our Portcrystal locations/sources guide.
  • Unmaking Arrow – Instantly kills a target, though the game will automatically save when you use it. Only usable if you have the Archer vocation selected; costs 8 WLC.
