Baldur’s Gate 3 exec condemns ‘threats and toxicity’ against devs as they work on mod support

An executive at Baldur’s Gate 3 studio Larian has condemned “threats and toxicity” against developers as the team works on implementing official mod support for the game on all formats.

In a lengthy thread on X, Larian director of publishing Michael Douse also confirmed that the game had now surpassed 10 million players.

Larian confirmed last week that it’s working on official cross-platform mod support for Baldur’s Gate 3.

In posts on X and Discord, Larian representatives acknowledged fan frustration over Baldur’s Gate 3 updates breaking different mods, such as the Script Extender.

At the time, Douse noted that he appreciated that players get frustrated when some unofficial mods stop working each time the game is updated, and said this was one of the reasons the development team was working on an official solution.

However, it would appear that since that message was posted, developers (in particular the game’s community team) have been subject to abusive behaviour from some players, leading to Douse taking to X again to criticise their behaviour.

“We’ll be talking in depth about what our mod support will look like soon,” he explained. “Been working on it since launch. As always, we’ll discuss it in our way with our community. Threats and toxicity against our devs and community teams will only harm the conversation. Please stop that.

“This is a game that went from [around] 2 million players to way over 10 in a very short space of time, so it’s natural the conversation becomes muddier and complex. But in order to maintain the same level of dialogue, we need people to understand that these conversations take time.

“We can’t do it at all without the dedicated community teams that work to untangle a giant web of noise into something we can work with for the benefit of everyone. If you truly want to know things about the game, please don’t chip away at the people who connect us all.

“99.9% of our community are the absolute best and it’s because of them – thankfully – that my community team persevere. But I suppose it was inevitable that when you have a city, a few bad eggs will start a fire.

“Until then, Baldur’s Gate 3 does not yet have mod support. Don’t get angry at mod authors, support teams, community or developers. Our focus is to patch the game while working on future mod support. I understand why it’s frustrating, so what we all need to do is focus on that future.”

Baldur’s Gate 3 has been met with huge critical success, and most recently took took home five prizes at the DICE awards earlier this month.

Larian’s title picked up the coveted Game of the Year award, was named Role-Playing Game of the Year, and won Outstanding Achievement awards across Story, Game Direction, and Game Design.

It also won Game of the Year at The Game Awards in December, along with five other awards including Best Performance, Best Community Support, Best RPG, Best Multiplayer and Player’s Voice.
