Dragon Quest 3’s HD-2D remake has been teased for the first time in three years

Square Enix has teased its HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest 3 for the first time in three years.

The publisher initially confirmed back in May 2021 that it was working on five new Dragon Quest games, including a remake of Dragon Quest 3 in its HD-2D style.

However, nothing has been seen of the game since then, leading some to wonder if it was still in development.

Today, to mark Dragon Quest Day, Square Enix posted a teaser video on the official Dragon Quest account on X, suggesting more information is coming.

The video shows the symbol from the Dragon Quest 3 logo, along with the words “the legacy begins”. The tweet also reads: “The legend of Erdrick draws near.”

This messaging has led some to speculate that the game will actually be an HD-2D remake of the first three Dragon Quest games, given that the games are sometimes to referred to as the ‘Erdrick trilogy’.

However, given that Dragon Quest 3 is chronologically the first game in the trilogy and marks the first time the hero is named Erdrick, it’s likely just referring to this.

The teaser also suggests the game will be coming to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch and PC.

HD-2D is the visual style used by Square Enix for a number of its recent RPGs, including the Octopath Traveler games, Triangle Strategy and its remake of Live A Live.

Dragon Quest games have sold over 82 million units worldwide since the first title released in 1986, according to Square Enix.

The last mainline entry in the series was Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, which originally released for 3DS and PS4 in Japan in 2017 before making its way west and to other platforms.

Dragon Quest XII was also announced at the same time as the Dragon Quest 3 remake, but Square Enix has been similarly quiet about that.
