Pikachu card that caused riots to be mass reprinted by The Pokemon Company

The rare Pikachu Pokemon card that caused scalpers to swarm the Van Gogh museum in The Netherlands last year, is to be widely rereleased by The Pokemon Company.

The Pokémon Company was forced to apologise last year after scalpers appeared to spoil a planned collaboration with the museum, which saw a line of unique Pokémon x Van Gogh merchandise made available.

When the items first went on sale, social media videos showed huge crowds swarming the museum, snatching up items, with claims that many people had bragged about plans to resell the items for profit.

The special Pikachu promo card, “Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat”, was given to customers for free after purchasing any item, and quickly appeared for sale in large numbers on auction sites for over $600.

While this price did come down, especially after a small restock of the card which was made available on The Pokemon Center online store, it’s still highly sought after.

It’s believed that the reprinting of this card is partly to deflate the after-market value of the card. The Van Gogh Pikachu ended 2023 as the most valuable card released last year, with prices on eBay often crossing $200.

According to Pokebeach, the following stores in The Netherlands will receive copies of the card, which will be given to shoppers who spend more than €29.99 on TCG products:

  • Bruna
  • Game Mania
  • Intertoys
  • Media Markt
  • Primera
  • Top1Toys
  • Smyths Toys Superstores
