The Lord Of The Rings: War Of The Rohirrim Figures, Funko Pops, And More Merch Available Now
The Lord of the Rings has returned to theaters with the new anime movie The War of the Rohirrim, which is set 183 years before Peter Jackson’s film trilogy. The movie was animated by anime studio Sola Digital Arts, and features several production alums from Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, including producer and co-writer Philippa Boyens, who also co-wrote the screenplays for Jackson’s films.
The War of the Rohirrim is based on writing found in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings. Specifically, it focuses on the kingdom of Rohan and its best-known ruler, Helm Hammerhand (voiced by Brian Cox). King Hammerhand’s reign coincided with the war against the people of Dúnedain. The war with Dunlending raiders for control of the kingdom is the central conflict in the anime. Helm’s Deep, the site of a pivotal battle in The Two Towers, gets its name from Hammerhand.

What to read before watching The War of the Rohirrim
As part of Tolkien’s meticulous dedication to detail and worldbuilding, the author wrote at considerable length about Middle-earth’s history in the appendices of The Lord of the Rings, providing helpful context for readers to reference while reading. The War of the Rohirrim, as mentioned, is based on a section in the appendices revolving around Helm Hammerhand and his kingdom of Rohan.
Since The War of the Rohirrim takes place 183 years prior to Frodo’s quest to save Middle-earth, you shouldn’t need to watch the films or read the book to enjoy the anime. However, those who. have read The Lord of the Rings, and especially the appendices and other histories of Middle-earth, will probably get more out of the story.
If you’re interested in reading The Lord of the Rings and its appendices before heading to the theater, Amazon still has some awesome deals on J.R.R. Tolkien books on the heels of Cyber Monday. The Lord of the Rings Illustrated Edition is arguably the prettiest edition in print today that’s reasonably priced. Right now, The Lord of the Rings Illustrated Edition is on sale for $40 (was $75). Featuring 30 full-color illustrations by Tolkien himself, this stunning hardcover has red-stained page edges with Elvish script, a foil-stamped dust jacket, and the Eye of Sauron embossed on the cover. It also comes with two fold-out maps and a ribbon bookmark. You could use the bookmark above to mark your place in the main story while using the ribbon bookmark in the appendices for quick reference.
There are plenty of other editions of LOTR to choose from, including The Lord of the Rings Deluxe Edition with a suede-like cover for 50% off. Then there are editions that split The Lord of the Rings into its three volumes, such as the new Lord of the Rings Collector’s Edition Box Set that’s on sale for over $30 off. All three books in this set have foil-stamped covers, stained edges, ribbon bookmarks, and maps of Middle-earth inside the front and back covers.
Beyond Lord of the Rings, Amazon also has great deals on The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, and numerous History of Middle-earth box sets. Most notably, The Hobbit’s Tolkien Illustrated Edition is on sale for only $29 (was $75).
