The Borderlands movie is getting a digital release just three weeks after its cinema release

The Borderlands movie is getting a digital release later this week.

The film will be available to buy or rent on streaming platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV and Google Play starting on Friday, August 30. It will cost $24.99 to purchase and $19.99 to rent.

Given that the movie’s theatrical release was August 9, that means the film has gone from cinema to digital in just three weeks.

The speedy digital release will doubtless be due to the film’s disastrous ticket sales. Its opening weekend, described as “embarrassing” by Variety, saw it making only $8.8 million domestically, meaning it could only manage fourth place in the North American box office.

To date the film has grossed just $24 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, against a production budget of roughly $115 million (with further marketing and distribution costs of $30 million).

Signs were not looking good for the Borderlands movie when early social media impressions were negative, and subsequent full reviews were almost entirely critical.

After scoring 0% on review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes after its first 25 reviews, at the time of writing it now has around 150 reviews and a total score of 10%.

Vicky Jessop at the London Evening Standard gave the movie one star, writing: “Is Borderlands the worst film of the year? It’s definitely in contention – so laughably bad, in fact, that it feels like being catapulted back to a time when video game adaptations were a byword for mediocrity.”
